Bell Ringer:  Who was Shi Huangdi, and what is he most famous for?

Activate Prior Knowledge:

  1. What rivers did Chinese civilization develop along? (Huang He, “Yellow,” and Yangzi)
  2. Why were natural barriers important to China? (isolation allowed their culture to become very unique)
  3. What is the “Mandate of Heaven”? (belief that the heavens and gods direct families to take over and rule China for as long as the gods see fit)
  4. What are the steps of the Dynastic Cycle? (new dynasty takes over, the dynasty prospers, the dynasty declines, rebellion and overthrow, old family loses Mandate and new family claims it, back to new dynasty takes over)

Deliver Instruction:

Students will follow along with the lecture in order to fill in a note packet on ancient China.  We will continue with the sections on Confucianism, Taoism, and Legalism.

Group Activity:

Students will get back into their groups from Tuesday to complete their posters on the Dynastic Cycle of China.  They will get approximately 15 minutes to complete them.

Class Assignment:

Students will use their textbooks and notepacks to complete a chart comparing Confucianism, Taoism, and Legalism.
